The right clothes for work

The right clothes for work This post was written by Sarah Turner, single mother of two with over 5 years of experience in professional careers advice. In any working environment, it helps to have the right clothes. For employees, this keeps them safe and offers a certain level of appearance. For employers, it helps create a sense of professionalism, teamwork and unity across the company. The same can also be applied if youre looking for work. Sometimes you may want to provide your own as a sign of commitment whilst at other times you may simply want to show your readiness to wear the required clothing. Likewise, if youre an independent worker, the right appearance and clothing is highly important and all up to you. Practicality First and foremost, there are a variety of jobs and industries where clothing needs to be practical. A painter, for instance, may need to wear snickers work trousers when working. These clothes offer a vast number of pockets, material that doesnt mind getting dirty and thick cloth to help when leaning down or reaching up high. It helps make the job easier to complete, making it an important tool. Practical clothes demonstrate a strong work ethic that many employers will find attractive. It suggests people arent afraid to get stuck in and do the required task. It can also suggest that due caution and understanding of the work and materials involved has been carried out and that safety is a priority for this individual â€" another positive characteristic. Appearance When dealing with practical trades that use hands-on skills, appearance takes on a less corporate image but still needs to be professional. This clothes are almost universally recognised as being connected with these industries and that presents a professional image to outsiders such as prospective customers and even investors or business partners. From a business perspective, this makes for a very professional appearance relative to the industry in question. Customers expect certain things from certain people by default. An office, for instance, expects suits or formal wear whilst industrial trades suggest something different. This is where snickers trousers, overalls and other clothes come in. They are to their industry what a suit or formal dress is to the office environment. Its the little details that connote the bigger message to any customer and this is even more important for those who work in the public sphere as their appearance can act as a form of promotion to existing and prospective clients. A Sense of Humor is Worth Big Money in the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

A Sense of Humor is Worth Big Money in the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Adrian Gostick, a bestselling author, who gives us a lesson in the importance of humor in the workplace.   He has some excellent and eye opening research for you that proves people need to loosen up in the workplace in order to establish trust. What is a personal/corporate/product brand without a personality? Why do you think humor is a key part of ones personality and what is the perception of those are that are humorous (will it benefit their career)? The Harvard Business Review found that executives with a sense of humor climb the corporate ladder faster and make more money in their careers. Why? The traditional wisdom suggests that serious people are given more credence in business. After all, who would want a goofball handling finances, dealing with an upset client or piloting your plane? But levity isn’t about being silly, it’s about lightening up a presentation, workplace or relationship to enhance communication, trust and credibility. It really does work. After all, who would you rather be managed by, sold by or taught by: someone who is fun to be around or someone who thinks lightening up is rolling up his sleeves? What are 3-5 benefits that humorous managers will get by being light-hearted and funny with their employees? We found an overwhelming amount of evidence that trust is significantly enhanced with levity. And we are all looking to increase the trust levels with our employees. Other benefits are better communication, since when we are laughing we are listening. Also, creativity is stronger. Boeing uses fun to drive creativity in their organization, which is a fascinating case study in the book. Can you name a few managers that have succeeded because of humor/a strong personality? You bet. The book is laced with them. One great example is Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Empire and a really, really rich guy. He’s crossed dressed, bungee jumped, hung out in bars and done about everything possible to connect with and have fun with his people. He’s a billionaire who got there by building an organization that is serious about winning, but serious about having fun along the way. Can you reveal a few statistics from your book that connect a fun workplace to business results? The Great Place to Work Institute was kind enough to share some amazing data for our book, The Levity Effect. As they cut their 1-million person research study, they found that the top 100 organizations every year (Fortune’s top 100) have more than 80 percent of their employees who say they have fun at work. In the companies that try to make it to the list but don’tâ€"still very good companiesâ€"the number is just 60 percent who say they have fun. That is one of the largest gaps on the survey. Great organizations take time to think about fun from a strategic standpoint. Strange, but true. What are the drawbacks from holding back on your personality and by sticking with a boring 9-5 day workplace? Not much, as long as you don’t care about enhanced trust, stronger sales, better communication or greater creativity. Oh, and the evidence also shows you’ll live longer and be happier. And Harvard says you’ll also make more money. And Scott says you’ll be taller and better looking if you follow our advice, but I think he’s pushing it with those two. After all, though he’s really funny, he’s no George Clooney. Just don’t tell him I said that. Adrian Gostick is the author of several very successful business books including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-seller The Carrot Principle. His latest book, which is coauthored by Scott Christopher, is called The Levity Effect: Why it Pays to Lighten Up. He also wrote the bestsellers The Invisible Employee, A Carrot a Day and the 24-Carrot Manager. His work has been called a must read for modern-day managers by Larry King of CNN, fascinating by Fortune and admirable and startling by the Wall Street Journal. Adrians books have been translated into 20 languages and are sold in more than 50 countries around the world. As workplace researcher, author and presenter, he has appeared on network television programs and has been quoted in dozens of business publications and magazines.

More Than Style - Why Fashion Is Starting To Shift Toward Sustainability

More Than Style - Why Fashion Is Starting To Shift Toward Sustainability In the current world of unending social media feedback and related scrutiny, fashion houses and world-leading brands have had to sit up and take notice of customer concerns regarding environmental impact and sustainability. With profit margins and shareholder dividends on the line, there’s literally the world at stake for fashion’s big names. Fabric Of Change Often used as the default ‘natural’ fabric, cotton has a range of ecological issues associated with its use. The growing of cotton requires a staggering amount of natural resources both water and land. In order to yield a sum of cotton roughly equivalent to a t-shirt, a cotton grower would have to use 2700 litres of water. Consider the issues currently cropping up with viable potable water in major cities, and you can begin to see why it’s a good idea to consider the use of other, less destructive natural materials. Added to these concerns on the drain of available natural resources is the use of otherwise arable land for fibre crops in areas with high rates of poverty and famine and low food security. There’s also worrying levels of deforestation and natural habitat decline. Hide-based fabrics (leather and suede) are also problematic, contributing to global warming through animal pollutants, the aforementioned deforestation and chemical processing. With all that in mind, it’s no wonder that the fashion pack is beginning to cotton on. Bamboozled Looking toward the past in order to look toward the future, switched-on designers and textile makers are now producing ranges made from more environmentally responsible bamboo. Diverse clothing articles such as t-shirts, tights and even bamboo underwear are comfortable, climate controlling, and come without the heavy moral drain of similarly styled cotton pieces. Some benefits of using bamboo include its quick growth cycle, its oxygen generation capacity, and its lesser reliance on large sums of water. Bamboo can (and does) grow in areas with a lack of solid, reliable rainfall. The Dangers Of Fast Fashion The 24 hour news cycle which has heralded the rise of ‘fast fashion’ is another culprit in the legion of factors influencing the eco-crisis of modern fashion. The traditional fashion/runway cycle based around northern hemisphere seasons has been eclipsed by a perennial production machine which aims to replicate and recreate runway looks within a period of days, rather than the weeks and months of the past. This thirst for a quick fix of fashion has led to a drop in garment quality, and a reliance on materials which are synthetic, unsustainable for the planet, and not manufactured with longevity in mind. Green Label The rise of parallel brands within well known retailers as a test market for more ethical and sustainable fashion options is growing. Massive garment sellers such as HM and ASOS (which rely increasingly on the cycles of fast fashion) have created in-house parallel brands which tout eco-ethical benefits, such as improved worker conditions, fair-trade products, and more sustainable fabrics. These in-house labels (such as the aptly-named ‘Conscious’ by HM) are priced at a higher point, and aimed towards the increasing market of discerning consumers who use their money and repeated custom to send a message to fashion houses that the old systems and their lack of environmental and ethical awareness are no longer acceptable. The 24-hour news cycle which perpetuates and helps propagate fast fashion is aptly enough the same reason fashion companies can no longer claim to be ignorant of their ecological impact. Brands wishing to take advantage of the growing tide of critical consumers have already begun the slow transition from less sustainable fibres via their parallel brands, while smaller outfits remain ahead of the game by pioneering more environmentally and ethically sustainable fabrics before outright crisis ensues.

Tis the Season for Giving Be a Job Search Santa! - Pathfinder Careers

Tis the Season for Giving Be a Job Search Santa! - Pathfinder Careers Tis the Season for Giving: Be a Job Search Santa! Ho ho ho!   The holidays are  upon us,  and Christmas is just around the corner. But unfortunately, many people aren’t feeling so jolly this holiday time simply because they still haven’t found work, which can be incredibly depressing  during this time of gift giving. If you find yourself in this situation, here’s a few tips that will help you keep your head up and still enjoy the celebration. You can be a Job Search Santa, believe it or not, and here’s how you can still enjoy the spirit of the season… which is giving: 1)   Find a volunteer opportunity and give of your time. Not only are you helping a noble cause, but you are also making connections and learning new skills that can be helpful at a later time.   And you never know when good karma can circle back to you as a result of giving your time and energy! 2) Realize that we all live in abundance, and give back.   You might not be able to give a physical gift to someone, but stepping outside your circumstances and helping another person engaged in a job search by offering your contacts and advice, that can also help lift another person’s spirits as well.   Open up your LinkedIn contacts and address book, as well as your calendar, and you’ll be amazed at how helping others helps you as well. 3) Mentor someone.  â€Brother, can you lend me a hand?”  No matter how bad your circumstances are, there’s always someone else who has it worse  or just needs that one person who will help elevate them to the next level… and you could hold this key.   Mentoring someone can help bring out the best in you and help lift someone else up.  You might not have a job  to offer that person, but helping them achieve their dreams can help you  realize your own!  By working with each other during a job search and supporting one another, everyone gets a boost. 4) Thank those that have helped you.   Remember to drop a note or even pick up the phone to thank people who have helped your job search, no matter the results.   By taking a moment and making this gesture, you are giving a valuable gift back: gratitude.   In our fast-paced society, appreciation and gratitude are not expressed often enough, which oftentimes leads to  the impression  that many  people have a sense of entitlement.   Instead, give a gift of thanks to those who helped you, and that will touch their very heart. The spirit of Christmas is about giving, whether it be big or small, it’s the effect that matters. How can you help someone else by giving? Merry Christmas!

What Does the Average Job Seeker Really Know About Searching For a Job - CareerEnlightenment.com

Use of an assessment that reliably measures job search knowledge is a strong first step in diagnosing what an individual does and does not know.  Higher ed, workforce readiness programs, and individual career coaches and counselors can then help him or her close the knowledge gap using curriculum, individual action plans, and staying abreast of current and emerging job search trends through electronic media (like this blog). So what does it all mean?  Hiring managers, HR leaders, and recruiters all agree that when a qualified job seeker does more of the right things in his or her job search, he or she stands head and shoulders above his or her competition for the job. This leads to more job offers, better jobs, higher compensation, and possibly being placed on a faster track once hired. To learn more about our research, the assessments, and how to use them in higher ed, workforce readiness, career coaching and counseling applications, please contact us at boyermanagement.com.
